The Theme of the Conference

the theme of the conference is as follows:

"National HIV/AIDS/STI/ORID Research:- Providing the Evidence for Improved National Actions"
(Ntwa e Bolotse)

The theme was chosen for several reasons:

  1. To improve utilization of HIV/AIDS/STI/ORID information through different research sources available in the country
  2. To build a national HIV/AIDS Research team to sustain the continuous generation of National Research data according to the National research priorities
  3. To utilize data to understand the epidemic, the impact of national actions and improve national actions
  4. To share local information within the context of global research agenda

Other sub-themes will be from research areas as follows:

Track One: Basic science, vaccine and vaginal microbicide research

    1. Epidemiology of HIV/AIDS/STI/ORID
    2. Geographic variations in HIV
    3. Biology, pathogenesis and immunology of HIV
    4. HIV resistance to ARV's
    5. The design and testing of HIV vaccines
    6. Host susceptibility to HIV infection and its clinical expression
    7. New laboratory tests for HIV/AIDS
    8. Ethics, legal situation and human rights in HIV research
    9. Vaginal Microbicide


Track Two: Policy, society and HIV/AIDS

    1. Policy and HIV/AIDS
    2. Resource mobilization
    3. Socio-cultural & economic issues in infant feeding
    4. Improving access to ARV therapy
    5. HIV and prisons
    6. HIV migration
    7. Private sector response to HIV/AIDS
    8. HIV/AIDS in the workplace
    9. Stigma and Discrimination
    10. HIV/AIDS impact on demographics/economics/services/social structure
    11. Gender issues in HIV/AIDS prevention & Care

Track three: Community care and support; role of PLWA (persons living with HIV/AIDS)

    1. Community approach to the problem of orphan and other vulnerable children Community and Home Based Care/Family Care
    2. Greater involvement of PLWHA
    3. Community Based/ Faith Based organizations in care & support
    4. Monitoring and Evaluations of community based programs
    5. Ethics, legal and human rights issues


Track four: Approaches to HIV prevention

    1. Political and multi-sector approaches
    2. Behavioral change interventions & communications
    3. Local responses (districts, communities, faith based, etc)
    4. Minimizing the vulnerability of difficult to reach population groups

Track five: Clinical and therapeutic approaches

    1. Traditional medicine; alternative medicine; nutrition
    2. HIV/AIDS and Nutrition
    3. ARV Medicine and clinical monitoring in HIV/AIDS (including adherence and treatment failure)
    4. STI treatment
    5. Prophylaxis, diagnosis and management of opportunistic infections including TB
    6. Neoplasms during HIV infection
    7. Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission (clinical issues)
    8. Monitoring and evaluation of care interventions.
